Understanding VAT
What is VAT?
Value Added Tax is a consumption tax assessed on the value added to goods and services at each stage of production and distribution. It's used in more than 160 countries worldwide.
How rates vary
Most countries apply a standard rate plus reduced or zero rates for things like food, books, and education. Consulting might be taxed at the standard rate while e-books are reduced.
Net vs gross
The net price excludes VAT; the gross price includes it. Add VAT to go from net to gross, or remove it to work back from a gross total to the net.

Multiply the net amount by the VAT rate to get the VAT, then add it back. For example, CHF 1,000 at 8.1% VAT is 1,000 × 0.081 = CHF 81 VAT, for a gross of CHF 1,081. The calculator does this for you in the “Add VAT” mode.
Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate. At 20% VAT, divide the gross by 1.20 to get the net; the difference is the VAT. Switch the calculator to “Remove VAT” mode to do this automatically.
VAT is collected at every stage of the supply chain, with businesses reclaiming the VAT they pay on inputs. Sales tax is charged only once, at the final point of sale to the consumer. VAT applies in more than 160 countries.
It depends on the country. In Switzerland, for example, businesses generally must register once turnover exceeds CHF 100,000 per year. Always check your local threshold and rules.
For many cross-border B2B transactions, the buyer accounts for VAT instead of the seller. The seller invoices without VAT and the customer self-assesses it in their own country.
